Hello, learners of Spanish!

¿Qué tal estás? How are you?

My name is Mónica, and I was born in northwestern Spain, in a region called Asturias (you really must visit that gorgeous land, if you haven’t done so yet :)) – but, life being unpredictable, I am living in Prague, Czech Republic.

I have always loved languages, so I studied Philology of Romance Languages at the University of Oviedo (Spain) and also at the University of Basel (Switzerland), where I spent my last year. During my university studies, I learned French, Portuguese, Italian and some Arabic. Then I went to hone my Italian at Perugia’s University for Foreigners (Italy) and I also took Arabic courses in Tunis (Tunisia) and Alexandria (Egypt). Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of the Arabic I learned there. I guess my head was making room for the Czech language, which I took up later :).

In 2014, I received a master’s degree in Linguistics Applied to the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language, and, since then, I have never stopped learning new things in this field to keep up with new findings about language acquisition and with new technologies. For example, in 2016 I signed up for Beatriz Mora’s course called Teaching Spanish Online.

Besides languages and my studies, my hobbies are reading, hiking (in the wonderful nature of the Czech Republic), travelling around this country and in other countries (in Spain, of course; that’s a must!). But what I like best is to help people learn Spanish… to see the “miracle” taking shape: they knew nothing, and now they can speak fluently. And, by the way, if I have learned one thing over the 10-plus years I have been teaching Spanish, it is this: “querer es poder” – “to want to is to be able to”.

See you soon!
